We had 45 entries and 35 were selected to finalists to be judged by Thad Flenniken, Art Instructor at the National park Community College. He received his BA and MFA from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. He exhibits at the Blue Moon Gallery in Hot Springs.
The criteria that Thad used to judge the 35 artwork was:
1. Thinking - Did the maker appear to have other objective than just representation
2. Structure, Construction, and Arrangement - Did it appear that planning for the picture involved the elements and principles of design.
3. Individual Perception and Uniqueness - Did the maker's sense of interpretation of subject reflect a uniqueness of vision.
4. Execution of and comfort with material used - Did the materials and their use enhance the maker's perceived intent.
His comments about the winners are as follows:
"Field Worker" was selected because of the artist's perception and choice of medium to further the sense of mystery. The subject matter has historical significance to the theme - From the Heart of Rural Arkansas.
"Ozark Barn" and "Glazy Peau Barn" were selected because of their unique interpretations of barns and their use of contrast, light and color.
"Moonshine and Square Bales" was selected because of the artist's color choice and skill in executing a difficult subject, fields at night.
