PLACES AND SPACES

Online Gallery

Landscapes are the closest subject to my heart. Whether it is the varied scenes of my home state, man-made structures in the environment, or scenes from travels in other countries, I am always inspired by the shapes, patterns of sunlight and shadow, and moods brought on by changing weather and time.

The horizontal lines of a landscape remind me that I am tied to the earth; the verticals balance the composition and remind me of my spirituality. Trees especially, remind me of my humanity – some are strong and stalwart, some are swayed by every wind that comes along, some are reaching up into the sky as if to grasp the clouds, and some are dried and dead. Lately, I have begun adding figures to the landscape.

Even though I try other media and subject matter, I will always return to the landscape in pastel.
