2011 marks the sesquicentennial of the Civil War and during the month of May, Arkansas Heritage Month, The Fine Arts Center of Hot Springs will explore the role that art has during civil unrest. Songs and letters from Union and Confederate soldiers shed light on how both sides had many things in common: a strong sense of faith, an attachment to the land, and enduring family relationships. Art is a universal language that can transcend cultural differences and bring unity. This is exhibit will provide Arkansans the opportunity to view songs and letters from their heritage and develop a knowledge of their legacy of struggle, endurance and diverse cultural roots.

The Fine Arts Center of Hot Springs is seeking artwork that will express the Three themes that emerge from the songs and letters:

a strong sense of faith

an attachment to the land and their farms

enduring family relationships and with their community

The artwork may be a portrait, a depiction of a scene expressed in the letters and songs, or an interpretation of one of the themes. The artwork will be displayed with the manuscripts and artist statements.

The songs and manuscripts can be obtained by emailing Donna Dunnahoe at hsfac620@sbcglobal.net or attending the informational meeting on Saturday, February 5 th.
